Cataloochee Valley - Family Trip Worth Going To

Cataloochee Valley holds fond memories. It’s a backbone to tradional history as it lies among the Smoky Mountains.  A very popular place to visit, even though it’s hard to get to because of location.

As for family trips in cars, the roads are mostly gravel. They are well maintained and great for travel, you will find them winding and long as a general rule. If you have sufficient time there should be no problem.

The U.S.National Park Service, which we thank for these directions guides you by following route:

The most direct route is to take Cove Creek Road (partially graveled). From interstate I-40, exit at North Carolina exit #20 and travel 0.2 miles on route 276. Turn right onto Cove Creek Road and follow the signs 11 miles into the Cataloochee Valley.

A more scenic route  (not recommended for RVs)  is to take a long winding road,  route 32,  from Cosby TN to the Tennessee - North Carolina state border. Here the road becomes gravel. It twists and winds into Cataloochee. (This route is not recommended if your passengers are prone to car sickness.)

Location of Cataloochee Valley is of course now part of the Smoky Mountain National Park. It’s inclosed by peaks which are 6000 feet high in the southeastern United States and very rugged mountain territory. It’s popularity came from prosperous farms-orchards plus tremendous scenic beauty.

Coming from Cherokee you travel 39 miles to reach it or coming from Gatlinburg Tennessee you’ll go 65 miles.

Cataloochee Valley exciting adventure. Go fishing. (check the rules at park visitor center)  See the wildlife like the elk deer turkey and bear. Take a tour of the old historic buildings by car and some walking. Go hiking-camping-horse back riding (800-365-2267 for reservations). Have Fun!

Cades Cove - Fall In Love With Nature

Cades Cove with its beautiful valley where the deer come to feed from the lush fields. Thunderhead Mountain rises high above it with snow covered top much of the winter months and spring. Mountains circle around and create a scenery no brush can paint.

You will see bear, fox,and turkey as well as other wildlife roaming around for food. On occasion you might see a sow with her cubs. Keep your distance for they have been known to attack if they thought their cubs were being threatened.

Always try to bring field glasses or binoculars. This will greatly enhance your pleasure of watching without getting too close. you’ll be able to spot animals and birds you’d never know were around, with the natural eye. A camera and camcorder will let you take this back home.

History comes alive at Cades Cove. Log houses, outbuildings, barns, several churches and a grist mill dating back to the latter 19th and early 20th century.

You’re never far away as it’s only 27 miles from Gatlinburg. Just 9 miles from lovely Townsend. If you’re coming from Cherokee drive 57 miles and you’ll be there.

There’s a loop that takes you around the cove one way for 11 miles. You’ll have restrooms, visitor center and the historic Cable Mill area (half way). Walking and bicycle traffic allowed every Wednesday and Saturday morning, sunrise to 10:00 a.m.  May through September.

A five mile roundtrip to Abrams Falls and Cove Nature Trail which is a short distance. You can hike up Rocky Top  and Thunderhead Mountain which are quite a bit longer. There’s some backcountry campsites along trails, but be sure to get your permit first.

For you Cades Cove RV’s (up to 35 feet) and tent lovers there is 159 campground sites open all year. Get on the internet and go to: http://reservations.nps.gov or call 800-365-2267 to have your site reserved.
