Out in the thick forest of Pine,Oak,and Laurel you could hear a pin drop.I had just finished the last bite of delicious Trout, freshly caught. My cup of Java was washing it down.About to pour the final drops into the cup,I heard a noise.

Slowly leaning back against the large Pine, midday sun shining bright,I saw a shadow.
Slowly moving my eyes around, keeping my head still,I saw him scamper into my tent.
Less than a minute, the weathered old squirrel came shooting out.His mouth held tightly to one of my English Walnuts which I enjoyed as a snack.

Old Gray, which I knighted him, never saw me.If he had,he'd never have come back.
In truth,he carried 10 of my nuts off. Finally, having had enought of the old thief,I stood up.Seeing me he broke all records climbing the Giant Oak and disappeared Chatter...chatter.In whatever language a Squirrel speaks,he was chewing me out.I laughed cleaning my pot.

I've spent more hours than I could ever count Camping. I still smile to myself ,thinking
of some of the silly things I've done. Camping is an art. You learn by experience. By
reading a book or article you learn ABOUT Camping. But,by going Camping you learn
HOW to Camp.Experience is the best teacher in the world. And you'll learn quickly.

I was in my makeshift tent one friday morning. I had been sleeping soundly, but
around 2:00 AM something woke me up.I couldn't see anything at first. As my eyes
began to focus in the darkness,my ears told me where to look. The smell made my
heart beat almost out of my chest. There was a skunk sniffing my food pack...

I thought about taking the club, laying next to me and doing a job on him.But I
patiently waited, and I've always been glad I did. In five more minutes,he left, just
like he came. And I knew my decision not to club him was right. My whole camping
trip would have been ruined.,along with all my gear and supplies.Learn by experience.

Your-List-Getting-Started

Before even leaving home, try to spend at least a day figuring what you'll need, and
how long you're planning on staying. One of the most helpful items a Camper takes
is a hatchet,or one hand ax.Use this for your wood, plus kindling for starting fires. Also you can cut limbs out of the way.The flat end can drive in your tent spikes.

Strike anywhere matches are a must.Take an oiled cowhide skin to wrap them up and keep moisture out.I knew a man who accidently fell into a stream with his backpack on.Slogging out of the water, and night coming on,he open his oilskin and found his matches completely dry.In a short time he had a fire.

Now I'm giving you some old fashion tips.To be an expert Camper, follow the rule of letting nature be your supplier. You'll not only save alot of money. You'll find the Camping Adventure of meeting each challege with your brain instead of store bought items. And it'll give you a sense of accomplishment.

However... may I suggest that you not go far from home until you've been out in the wild and gotten used to living off the land. This will save you much pain and hurt. There is danger of not knowing your surrounding such as snakes, poison oak, ivy, and summac.Bears which kill humans. Also Quicksand that can spell death.

Another suggestion if you will allow me.Take a good friend or someone with you, while you're learning to become an expert Camper and Woodsman. If you run into a problem, two heads are better than one.Find a State Park close to home. This is a great way to "learn the ropes" on a survival trip.

Or ask a neighbor who owns alot of land if you can use his place for a Camping Outer. He might even choose to go with you and learn himself. Now,always add fishing line and hooks.A foldup, light Boyscout type shovel or even a trowel comes in so handy for digging fishworms, etc.

The shovel can be used for digging roots that are edible. Also, your food which is left over can draw all kinds of wild critters. So I dig me a nice hole to put the waste food in,cover it up,and put rocks over it.This works great

You'd be amazed how many animals you'll see while out Camping. However always bury food a long ways from camp.Bears have keen smell.
