Wild Mushrooms are probably the area to be most caution.There
are some very foolish ideas going around,especially in years gone by.
Some old timers thought if they put a copper penny in with the
mushrooms,the poison would go into the copper.NOT TRUE!
There are several varieties of Morel.But they look intirely different
from other mushrooms. Another edible kind in which nothing else
looks like it is the Shaggymane which grows in the fall and delicious.
The big puffballs,growing in meadows are edible and so good.
Learn these and what they look like and you won't need any more.
The puffballs need to be picked fresh and peeled,the tough outside
comes off easily.Do not use any that show brown spots,which
means they're past their prime.
MORE OF NATURES FREE FOODS
Close to the stream bank there are Marsh Marigolds,or
Cowslips,having big green leaves,when young can be boiled.
There is onion like plants,with narrow leaves called leeks,can be dug.
Mix these in with the boiling Marigolds.Use sparingly,they're strong.
Then round you up a Rabbit to roast,or a Squirrel,or turn over rocks
for the delicious Crayfish,or Craydab as some call them.Cook and serve
together with greens and leeks,add pepper.Wonderful meal.Can use
young shoots of grape vine or watercress to make it even better.FREE.
I remember my Mom sending us out to get wild Branch Lettuce growing
by the creek.She'd wash it,pour hot bacon grease over it.Then chop
onions in.We would eat this with cream gravy and a big iron skillet of
cornbread.It was hard to quit eating.Watercress and Branch lettuce same.
The dandelion cooked,with peeled pine nuts and fresh meat from the
wild is mouth watering.Add wild fruits to taste like Heavenly Manna.
Wild Strawberries.Gooseberries.Huckleberries,wild Grapes,Blueberries,
Blackberries,Cranberries, Honey Suckle Fruit.I'm only touching surface.
Maple buds used in salad,and Maple Syrup as a drink.Flour from Oak
Acorns for bread or campfire pancakes.The tannic acid was soaked out.
Wild nuts such as Beechnuts,Walnuts,Hickory nuts,Pinon Nuts.There is the
Juneberry or Service Berry,Raspberries,wild Cherries,Persimmons.
