Gatlinburg Airport - McGhee Tyson Airport

The Gatlinburg airport is obviously the fastest way to the Smoky Mountains although you do miss some of the breathtaking ground-level scenery. The Gatlinburg airport is located at 1255 Airport Rd in Sevierville (yeah, I know.. explain that one) and their phone number is (865) 453-8393.

As I mentioned above, the Gatlinburg aiport is located in Sevierville.. as a funny side note, the Gatlinburg Municipal Golf Course is located in Pigeon Forge. I really think it is the locals demented way of throwing the visitors for a loop;-)

The Gatlinburg airport is a full-service FBO (fixed base operator) and its 5,500 foot runway can accomodate anything from the small puddle jumping aircraft to the larger corporate jets and chartered aircraft.

No landing fees are charged and you can park your plane overnight for a mere $5.00 bill.

Some of the on-site ammenities at the Gatlinburg airport include a maintenance crew, jet fuel, and gas for the piston-driven jobs. There is no shuttle service on site but the local Ford dealership operates a small rental car service on the premises. They can be reached at (865) 453-8918.

Then there is the McGhee Tyson Airport on Alcoa Highway in Alcoa located approximately 15 miles south of Knoxville on Highway 129 (the Alcoa Highway). They can be reached at (865) 342-3000.

The McGhee Tyson Airport boasts 14 airlines providing nonstop flights to 18 major cities including Atlanta, Dallas-Ft Worth, St. Louis, Chicago, and Washington D.C.

Some of the better known carriers that operate are Northwest, United, Delta, and U.S. Airways with Delta handling about 35 percent of the airport's traffic.

Parking at the airport is free for the first 30 minutes and you are then charged incrementally by the hour with an $8.00 per day maximum for long-term parking and $12.00 per day for short-term parking.

As you enter the terminal, you will find the baggage claim area and several rental car agencies on the lower level with the gates, ticketing, restaurants, snack bars, and a gift shop on the upper level.
