Good things to know-with nine million plus visitors each year to the Smoky Mountain whether in the warm summer or pleasant fall traffic can become a problem and even hold you up for one to two hours. Some thought can save you most if not all of the congestion, and peace of mind. I recommend as a former heavy traveler myself to do the following: Know the areas you want to visit and order online or through snail mail maps with details of those places from the visitor center( http://www.nps.gov/grsm/contacts.htm )or(Great Smoky Mountains National Park/107 Park Headquarters Road/Gatlinburg,Tn 37738 )Go online and download a Smoky Trip Planner which will answer most of your questions. Take pen and paper or your favorite web editor and after downloading the maps and guides of your determined visits, make a list of what you'll take, then go back over it removing what you really don't need.Make a note to have your vehicles serviced and checked prior to leaving. Be safe-while traveling, getting a good nights rest before leaving.Watch closely for Motorcyclists,or if you should be going on your trip by motorcycle beware as vehicles often cross center lines on blind curves and twisting roads. Always ask your doctor or caregiver to advise you on a portable first aid kit to take with you for bee stings,Allergic reaction to them or plants, etc. Also, your food and water will be different than what you're used to so get water treatment tablets for the wilderness hiking if you use any water out of streams. My Smoky friends who read my articles know how I always advise on taking "pepper spray"for protection so I won't go into detail here except to say this.Buy the freshest largest commercial type spray you can to bring on your trip and learn to use it like an expert before hiking or camping or sight seeing. Always write down full directions where you're going and get familiar with them before leaving. It is always good to take high quality flashlight and extra batteries as you never know when you might have a flat tire at night while traveling. Weather conditions can quickly change in the Smokies,so if you choose to go in late fall or winter be prepared.Take plenty of warm but well vented clothing.Elevations can go from 800 feet to 6600 feet and the temperatures can range as much as 20 degrees in higher areas.
